Pretzel Dogs | Soft Pretzels Meet Hot Dogs

Today I’m sharing with you a super-indulgent recipe, Pretzel Dogs. Made famous by food chains like Auntie Anne’s or Wetzel’s Pretzels, I am offering up a semi-homemade version instead. These make for great football food, a snack, or a lunch! And, they’re really easy to make, too! You only need a little time to let your dough defrost and rise, but they only take a few minutes to assemble and bake. Can’t beat that! Pair with your favorite dipping sauce for either hot dogs or soft pretzels and you’ve got a winning combo sure to please just about anyone.

Hot Dog Pretzel Ingredients

Only 6 ingredients are needed to whip up these tasty Pretzel Dogs. Here is what you’ll need:

  • Frozen White Bread Rolls – I used Rhodes rolls. Feel free to use homemade dough or your favorite soft pretzel recipe.
  • Hot Dogs – any kind/brand you like will work! Can you imagine these made with a meaty polish dog and served with spicy mustard? Heaven!
  • Water + Baking Soda – helps give the dough its signature crusty pretzel texture on the outside and soft inside.
  • Egg + Coarse Sea Salt – used to brush the tops of the pretzel dogs. The egg wash controls how brown these babies get while the salt is used for flavor.

How to Make Pretzel Dogs

Making Pretzel Dogs is pretty straightforward and simple to do. The hardest part is waiting for the frozen dough to defrost and rise. For full directions, see the printable recipe card below.

Step 1: Defrost + Proof Roll Dough

Defrost and proof roll dough according to packaged directions. This should take 3-4 hours.

Step 2: Prep Oven + Prep

Preheat oven. Line a half sheet pan with parchment paper and set aside.

Bring water to a boil in a pot. Add baking soda.

Step 3: Wrap Hot Dogs in Dough

While water is coming to a boil, remove hot dogs from packaging and blot dry with paper towels. Having dry hot dogs will help the dough stay in place, so be sure to not skip this step. Take 1 roll dough ball and roll on the counter into a rope. Wrap dough around your hot dog, tucking or pinching the ends onto itself to hold dough in place. Continue this process with remaining hot dogs.

Step 4: Boil Hot Dogs

Boil hot dogs and remove gently with large slotted spoon. Place onto prepared baking sheet. Brush with egg and top with coarse sea salt.

Step 5: Bake

Bake until dough is darker golden brown. Serve warm with ketchup, mustard, queso dip, anything your little heart desires.

Dipping Sauces for Pretzel Dogs

There are many great options here. Try a few out and see what you like best. Here are a few I suggest trying:

  • Fancy Mustard (spicy or sweet)
  • Ketchup
  • Ranch Dressing
  • Chili Cheese Dip
  • Queso Dip
  • Any and all of the Chick-fil-A sauces (I recently found out that they carry them in bigger bottles at the grocery store!)

Pretzel Hot Dog storage

Store leftover Pretzel Dogs in an airtight container for 4-5 days in the fridge. To reheat, throw them in the air fryer for a few minutes, or place on a baking sheet and into the oven at 375 for 3-5 mins or until heated through.
